How to declutter unnecessary clothes

When taking inventory of our wardrobe, we often find clothes that look lovely on the hanger, but we almost never wear them. When taking inventory of our wardrobe, we often find clothes that look lovely on the hanger but that we almost never wear. For many of us, it’s challenging to let go of clothes, even though deep down we know they don’t give us the confidence we desire. Why can’t we pass on good items, even when we know certain clothes will never see the light of day from our own closet?

It’s best to tidy up your wardrobe with a combination of emotion and reason. Our feelings hold on to the dream that keeps unnecessary clothes in our closet. When we bring reason into considering what’s needed, we may realize, for example, that a certain style doesn’t suit us or isn’t our style at all. Go through at least the following two points before putting an item back in your closet:

1. Have I worn this at all, and if I have, have I worn it enough?
If you’ve only worn the item a little compared to how often you could have, there’s probably a reason. The item doesn’t suit you or your needs, it doesn’t feel good to wear—or you simply don’t need it.

2. What is the purpose of this item? Did I buy it for everyday use, and have I used it for that purpose?
If you find, for example, clothes in your closet that you bought for a work event and then forgot about, remember this: They’ve already been in your closet for a year—what would change now to make you start wearing them? If you’re not using the clothes for their intended purpose now, you probably won’t in the future either.

Once you’ve managed to let go of extra clothes, you’ll notice how easy it is to keep your wardrobe tidy. It’s a wonderful feeling when your closet is organized sensibly and every piece of clothing has a purpose!
