Hey, wait – before you buy a new knit, what if you tried to see if a little care could make your old one like new again? In Finland, knits are used almost year-round. When you care for your knit properly, its lifespan increases and its resale value lasts longer.
When a knit is high-quality to begin with, you don't need a new one every season. Here are three easy tips on how to extend the life of your knits!
1. Store properly. Has your knit stretched out? This could be due to the way it's stored. When the material is made of soft natural fibers like various types of wool, they should preferably be stored on a shelf, not on a hanger. High-quality and especially heavy knits can stretch and lose their shape when hanging on a hanger.
2. Brush. Another new pill on your knit? Pilling doesn't necessarily mean poor quality. Natural fibers are lively materials, so even a knit containing valuable wool can shed surface fibers after some use. You can care for wool knits by brushing them with a wool brush to remove pilling.
3. Air out or spot clean. Musty smell or need to wash? You should avoid washing knits in the washing machine as much as possible. Your knit will last longer if you freshen it up by airing it out or freezing it. If your knit has stains, try removing them with spot cleaning using a detergent suitable for the material.
If, despite your care, your knit has seen better days, you can find a new, long-lasting knit, for example, from Emmy's lovely secondhand knit selection.
